Designing a functional kitchen in a narrow space can be challenging, however there are a variety of different design techniques that can make your space feel wider.

Design Tips to Make a Narrow Kitchen Look Wider with Replacement Kitchen Doors

Smart colour choices can elevate even the narrowest kitchens

While dark colours can make rooms feel quite closed in, deep hues actually have the ability to make a space feel much wider than it is. So, we encourage you to resist the temptation to choose a bright white for your narrow kitchen, which will ultimately make your space feel clinical and boxy.

Instead, choose a rich tone for your kitchen’s end wall and a complementary lighter colour for the other walls. This will ensure that the eye is guided all the way through your space, making it feel much more spacious.

Pro Tip: We recommend following this same guidance with your choice of replacement kitchen doors. So, choose a deeper colour for cabinets on your room’s end wall and a lighter colour for cabinets on other walls.

Pattern can create the illusion of more space

It’s a common misconception that small or narrow rooms simply can’t cope with patterned wallpaper or accessories. In fact, patterns are great at creating the illusion of depth, particularly if they contain a combination of lighter and deeper hues.

Hanging patterned wallpaper or a large piece of artwork at the end of a narrow kitchen will capture the eye’s attention and make the wall seem closer. This will work to correct the proportions of your space, giving the illusion of a wider room.

Pro Tip: Horizontal lines are perfect for making a room feel wider, so consider hanging a striped wallpaper horizontally to play with the proportions of your space.

Consider colour drenching

Choosing a single colour for your walls, ceiling, and replacement kitchen doors is known as colour drenching, which is a fantastic design technique for smaller rooms. By drenching your space in a single colour, there are no dramatic colour shifts or lines for the eye to get caught up on, which instead encourages us to appreciate the space we’re in.

If you’re keen to give this technique a try, choosing a bold or rich colour will create the best results. Our classic style Bella Shaker replacement kitchen doors are extremely versatile and are available in a selection of bold colours that are ideally suited to this design technique. We’d recommend sage green, denim or smoke green, as it’s often best to avoid bright shades, which can very quickly become overwhelming when used in large quantities.

Don’t forget the fifth wall

Ceilings are often referred to as the fifth wall by interior designers, however they’re so often overlooked. Painting your ceiling the same colour as your walls can make a room feel much wider, as it helps to blur the edges somewhat and create a sense of spaciousness that you wouldn’t otherwise feel.

If you would prefer to keep your kitchen ceiling white, but you still want to add some colour to your walls, we recommend limiting colour to the lower half of the wall. By taking your colour up to the height of a picture rail and leaving the upper half white, your ceiling will feel higher, which creates a sense of openness and airiness.

This is something that can be replicated with your kitchen cabinetry. Choose colourful replacement kitchen doors for your base cabinets and a lighter, neutral finish for your wall-mounted cabinets. Our Bella kitchen door range comes in a selection of neutral and more colourful finishes, all of which can be mixed and matched with ease.
